Washington, D.C. (March 19, 2008) – The Orlando/Central Florida Steering Committee of the Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) civil rights organization – has won five service awards for their volunteerism, legislative work and overall contribution to the fight for GLBT equality. The committee was recognized at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual Equality Convention in Washington, DC last week for the following:

  • Exceptional Work on a State Legislative Issue
  • Outstanding Achievement for Diversity and Inclusion
  • Federal Club Council Special Achievement
  • Fundraising Excellence for a Medium Federal Club
  • Best Community in the Southern Region

“We are thrilled that all of Orlando’s hard work is being recognized nationally by the Human Rights Campaign,” says Orlando Steering Committee Member and Events Co-Chair, Carlos Carbonell. “These awards and recognition from the Human Rights Campaign highlight the commitment from the 700,000 member organization has to Orlando’s grassroots community of supporters, volunteers and members. Being an election year, local involvement will be crucial to our movement in order to ensure fair-minded politicians are elected.”

While in Washington, D.C., members of the Orlando/Central Florida Steering Committee also participated in HRC’s Annual Spring Lobby Day and met with some of Florida’s congressional delegation, including personal conversations with Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL), and visits to the offices of Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL).
